WiTricity to Fulfil Nikola Tesla’s Dream

Latterly we talk a lot about science fiction stuff that became real. But the subject of the current article could not be called a “science fiction stuff” due to the fact it has been in research by Nikola Tesla in more than a century ago. He successfully lit a light bulb wirelessly at his New York laboratory at the end of 19th century. Four years ago, in 2009, a startup company from USA recreated Tesla‘s experiment and created wireless powered electronics. WiTricity, which obviously stands for Wireless Electricity, in a demonstration led by the company’s CEO Eric Giler successfully powered a TV and a smartphone without any wires. WiTricity was developed by Marin Soljačić at MIT, a scientist born in Croatia and emigrated to USA, very similar to Nikola Tesla‘s story. According to mr. Giler‘s speech, the scientist was inspired by… his wife’s mobile phone. He woke up several times one night because of the sound indicating low battery. Then he thought it would be nice if the device could be charged wirelessly without disturbing noises. That is how almost forgotten field of electrical engineering was revived. Eric Giler explained that the technology is safe as there is no radiation emitted because charging is held by magnetic fields.
